Running Tracks
With nearly 30 years of experience, R.A.D. Sports has established itself as a leader in the industry, completing multiple national award-winning running tracks. Our expertise enables us to successfully execute projects with precision and excellence. We are highly knowledgeable about various surfacing types and markings, adept at distinguishing between reusing existing asphalt, milling and overlaying, or undertaking a full-depth track construction. Moreover, we have forged strong relationships with the top surfacing companies, guaranteeing the delivery of the best possible end product.
Construction
When building a running track, we always consider what the primary use of the facility will be. An NCAA Division 1 facility will have more specific minimum size requirements versus a community or high school running track. Most running tracks will include an athletic field within its boundaries, which must be accounted for during the design process.
The elemental components of a running track include:
- Running lanes (typically 6 or 8)
- Straightaways
- Event Runways
- D zones
- Long and Triple Jump Sand Pits
- Raised or Non-Raised Curb
- Steeplechase
- Throwing Events: Discus, Hammer, Shotput, Javelin

Replacement & Renovation
There are varying degrees of replacement and renovation associated with running tracks. An overspray involves spraying a new wearing course and painting new line markings over an existing track surface. The next level of renovation would be to scrape off the existing surfacing, leave the asphalt in place. We then pour in place a new basemat before spraying the wearing course and painting line markings.
If the existing asphalt under the track needs to be partially addressed, there is the option to mill and overlay a new layer of asphalt before installing the new surfacing system. However, if you’re considering significant alterations to the layout or location of the facility, the optimal approach is full depth demolition followed by rebuilding the track from subbase up with new materials.
